Question travelled or traveled

Hello,

I am writing a brochure for the US market about a GPS-system, and I am wondering if I should write 'the device displays the distance travelled' or '...the distance traveled'.
I would go with 'traveled', but we are having an animated discussion before going to print, so now I'm not sure anymore...

I thought the rule was simple: there is no stress on the preceding vowel 'e', so we write with one 'l' only.
Is this rule correct? Or is a matter of AE versus BE?

Looking forward to reading your answer very soon!

Kind regards,

Thomas

Is the brochure for the UK, Europe, Australia and S.E. Asia, or specifically for the USA? You are caught between the different spellings of certain words, American English v British English.
'travelled" is correct for the UK etc
Some USA replier in this forum will tell you about there.

David,

My first sentence started with: "I am writing a brochure for the US market", so why are you then asking if will be for Europe or Asia?

And then you wrote: "Some USA replier in this forum will tell you about there." I don't understand this sentence... 'About there'? Where? To which place are you referring?

Kind regards,

Thomas

(I'm a British English speaker)

American dictionaries seem to give both spellings without stating thazt the double L is BrE. However, the spelling used by Merriam Webster withint the entry uses a single letter, which suggests to me that this is the form they prefer:
Definition of travel - Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary
travel. The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language: Fourth Edition. 2000.
