Default stay and live

Is "Where do you stay?" in Indian English the same as "Where do you live?" in British English? I am wondering whether 'stay' can be used to mean 'live' in some contexts.

In what context do you use the question? It would not be used to asked where someone lives in the UK.

If you are "staying" somewhere, it means you are there only temporarily -- you might, for example, stay at a hotel, or at your friend's house for a few days.

Without wanting to confuse the issue, although not standard British English, "stay" is commonly used in place of "live" in Scotland.
