For a start, are cavern and cave all but identical in meaning?
Second, what does skim over or skim forest mean? Thanks.

Skim means to move just above something. So you would be on a ride in Santa's sleigh just above the fields and just above the forests.

If you think of a hovercraft "skimming" across the water, it might help.

Santa's sleigh is magic and it can fly. Ordinary sleighs obviously can't.

There is a difference between cavern and cave, I think a cave has an opening in the side of a mountain or cliff etc while a cavern is largely underground.

I'd need to go and check myself to be sure.
