Some verbs double the final consonant when adding ing ,ed or er
This will not happen if the final consonant is y or if the final consonant follows a double vowel,
This rule exists to keep pronunciation consistent.
Hop jump up and down
Hope wish for something
Hopped jumped up and down
Hoped wished for something
The doubled consonant tells us how to pronounce the vowel and eliminates confusion between similar words. Hope does not double-consonant because it ends in e, and not a consonant. By the way, some consonants, such as w, h, and q are never doubled.
