remember to & remember + 'ing'

Hi,

Is there a difference between remember to do something & remember doing something?

Yes, there is a difference.
I must remember to watch the eclipse of the moon next week. (want to watch it in the future)
I remember watching the eclipse of the moon four years ago. (watched it in the past)

Hi there 2006,
I totally agree but "remember to do something" can also be in the past (I remembered to call my mum on her birthday last week), so your explanation is a little simplified (although I completely understand why :-)).
I'm sure I don't have to reinvent the wheel here...does somebody know a good link with a comprehensive explanation for this?

Fair enough:-), but....I don't think I'd be too far off in assuming bieasy was questioning the difference between the gerund object and the infinitive object, not the tense;-)

And what about:

I will remember to call him.

But: I remembered to do pick up the kids at school. ---> correct??

I remembered to pick up the kids at school

They are technically correct but it would depend on the context. You are right in that "remember" + "to" is often about responsibilities or duties (such as picking up your kids at school) but in another situation that same context could be about the mental action of remembering or not remembering ("remember" + "ing"): I remember picking up the kids at school but I can't remember what I did after that!
