escaped unhurt vs survived

Could someone tell me the diffetrence between the sentences:

1- The passengers escaped unhurt after the crash.
2- The passengers survived the crash.

Are there any alternative sentences for the above ones?

In the first sentence the passesngers not only survived the crash but were also uninjured. in the second we are told that they survived but we do not know if any were injured.
