Hello,

There are many modal verbs that have the meaning of obligation or suggestion.

If you put these five below in order according to the strength, what will it be like?

will, must, had better, should, ought to

I found the scale as follows in a reference book, which is written by a Japanese.

Do you find this OK? If you do, is it important?

1. will (strong)
2. must
3. had better
4. ought to
5. should (weak)

I've thought "should" and "ought to" have almost the same meaning, but it seems that there is a slight difference.

I'd like to get as many replies as possible.

I don't see much difference between ought/should. Will/must- this depends on the context and the enforceability; if someone who has no power over me uses 'you will do it' to show their authority, how strong is it?

It is a bad habit of Japanese people to try to analize things more than necessary. At least as far as languages are concerned, it seems better not to stick to details, which might be understood differently depending on people.

Trying to sort and categorise is a useful, but there has to be some flexibility. If not, then there may well be oversimplification.
