Default Familiar in or with?

One sentence taken from my test
"Just as with radio in earlier days, the publicity given to actors and actresses on the screen meant that a group of personalities became familiar in every household"

I think something's wrong with this sentnce, familiar in or with?

Have a look at these examples and see if they make it clearer for you:

Are you familiar with the works of Shakespeare?
I'm not familiar with this type of music.

Our teacher always played this piece of music to us, so it became familiar in our classroom.

At first I didn't like his new hair colour but after a week weeks it became familiar to me.

But here they use " every household", which means "everyone in the family", so there are only two possible choices : To and with, I think so

The characters in the soap operas on radio became familiar in the home, to the family.

With cannot work here.

But in the home should be finer than in every household, isn't it?

It depends on how formal you want to be. They are equal in meaning, but "in the home" is softer.
