Dear teachers,
I have three questions to ask:
No.1
They inched their way toward the summit. And it took them about two hours just to __________ a few feet.
a. go b. walk c. cover
I don't think 'a' is correct. But it is not because I know the reason but because it doesn't sound right.
Could you please explain 'b' and 'c'? I can't distinguish them.
No.2
We'll go ______________ it rains cats and dogs.
a. even if b. even though
To me they are the same. But The key is 'b'. Could you please explain why?
No.3
According to the Chinese version the word 'barely' bears two meanings. So the following sentence can mean: "She wasn't able to recognize him" or "She was able to recognize him with difficulty". Could you please explain how to choose or decide the meaning of it?
She could barely recognize him through his wounds.

In the test sentence, it says "they inched their way" - that implies it was very difficult to move, so "walk" is unlikely; "go" is possible; "cover" is possible. Both say that "they" only went a short distance in the two hours.

The purpose is to distinguish 'even if ' and 'even though' and the key is 'even though'.

Even though = although.
Even if = whether or not.
We'll go [even if] whether or not it rains cats and dogs.
We'll go [even though] although it rains cats and dogs.
To use Even though, the sentence would be better as:
We'll go [even though] although it is raining cats and dogs. |
