Is "cheers" only a British English slang word with the meaning of "thank you and bye"? I quite often heard it from British people (esp from young men), but as far as I rememer I've never stumbled upon it in American movies with the meaning that I mentioned. Thank you.

I think you will hear it in the US especially in the northeast (Boston and New York) but it is not commonly used in other places in the US as far as I know. You might hear it in Canada more frequently. Cheers!

The only time I've heard anyone use "cheers" in my part of the US (the south) is as a toast.
