The sentence you quote is perfect English.
"Premature death" means simply death which occurs before it should, before it would be expected. It has nothing to do with reaching maturity.

"Premature death" not necessarily refers to dying before one reaches the age of 18.
"Premature" is often associated with fatalities, say, He died prematurely in a car accident
