"whatever part" in this quote is incomplete.
These are all correct use of "whatever."
"whatever part you choose"
"whatever part you think is most important"
"whatever part would help you most"
"whatever part you consider most urgent"
In recent years young people have been using "Whatever!" To mean "I don't care, it doesn't matter." But this usage probably doesn't work in the quote, which seems formal.
I can't see any use for "total" in this context.
