That is not the future; it is the subjunctive mood, and that is a completely different thing. A simpler way to write this sentence would be: "The first letter must be in the right place."
Of course you can say "will be". Doris Day used it quite a lot in one of her songs:
When I was just a little girl,
I asked my mother, "What will I be?
"Will I be pretty? Will I be rich?"
Here's what she said to me:
"Que sera, sera,
"Whatever will be will be;
"The future's not ours to see.
"Que sera, sera."
However, "will" is a modal verb, and you can only have one modal verb in a verb phrase. That means you cannot say:
will can

will must

will could

will may

will might

will shall

will should

will would
