Default Forward / Forwards

What's the difference between forward and forwards? I'm writing about something moving forward and getting to its forward position.

Both are correct, and mostly interchangeable.

You couldn't say 'forwards position'. You can't use 'look forwards to hearing from you' either. the meaning is the same and often they are interchangeable, but not always. If it is in a phrasal verb or functioning as an adjective, then use 'forward'.
