The police are pursuing/hunting down the criminal
The police are pursuing/hunting down the criminal who escaped from the prison the other day.
Do both "pursuing" and "hunting down" fit in the above and mean about the same? Thanks.

More or less - pursuing = chasing/following; hunting down implies rather more searching for the escaped criminal.
