Question the difference between motion and bill

Hi there,

I came across the following sentences while studying my vocabulary:

-The motion to ban fox hunting was rejected by five votes.
-The government has introduced a bill outlining its plans for the coal industry.

Could you tell me what is the difference between motion and bill please.

Thanks a lot.

Pear

Default Re: the difference between motion and bill

A motion is a formal proposal put to a legislature or committee

A bill is a draft of a proposed law presented to Parliament for discussion

Generally a motion cannot become law, but can lead to the development of a bill that may eventually become law.
