Default still soft at the edges

It was 1934, I was nineteen years old , still soft at the edges, but with a confident belief in good fortune.

I was excited,vain-glorious, knowing I had far to go; but not , as yest, how far.

Please explain underline part of the sentences. Thanks

1) inexperienced

2) yest? Is that a word? Help. Maybe "yet"?

3) I knew I had far to go means, I knew I had a great deal to learn, but not, as yet (i.e. at the time), how much effort it would take. (The road/path to enlightenment is long and hard.) :D
