Default meaning of : came hours

The attack killed at least 15 other people and came hours after supporters of Sharif, a staunch opponent of Musharraf, came under fire from gunmen, with three people killed.

Please tell me what "came hours" means in this sentence.

Hi, user_gary!

Vil's comments are accurate.

The attack killed at least 15 other people and occurred hours after supporters of Sharif...

Another example: The blizzard came hours after the storm alert had been issued.

Cheers,

Thank you friends.

I am really not getting your explanation.

Do you mean that the attack happened after one hour?

Hello UG,

It means "the attack occurred [only a few] hours after X".

Best wishes,

Hi, user_gary!

Notice the plural of 'hour' in your Title Box (Re: meaning of : came hours)

Therefore, the attack happened more than one hour after supporters of Sharif were fired upon.

News reporters will use the 'came hours' expression in their stories because it is easier than reporting the exact time that something happened. For example, it would be awkward to write: The attack killed at least 15 other people and came Six hours, twenty-seven minutes, and forty-nine seconds after supporters of Sharif...

I hope this helps.

Cheers,
Amigos4
