I cannot guess the meaning of its in computer science case since Oxford, Longman and other dictionary have their own definition:

American Heritage: Computer Science The process of accessing information from memory or other storage devices.

Yes, I think retrieval could mean recovery of deleted data but it is also commonly used to mean accessing stored data (not necessarily deleted) too.

We often say "The French or the English or the Spanish etc." to refer to people who live in those countries.

Example: The French really know their wine and the English know their beer.
