Smile In the interests of hygiene,

In the interests of hygiene, please don't smoke in this shop.

Is it proper to interpret the phrase in bold as "For the sake of hygiene?" If not, what is it? Thanks.

Personally I think it is one of those bureaucratese phrases.

It doesn't really mean anything apart from Don't Smoke - it is not good for you or the people round you.
