Hi All,
I have glanced through the posts and all the replies were encouraging. I'm sure this is the right place to learn English.
I dont know the correct usage of "said" and "told".
Pls tell me when and where i have to use "Said" /"told"
I told him(Sam) that Ron will come tomorrow ( correct?)
"Ron will come tomorrow " i said to Sam (correct?)
can i use like this :
I said that Ron will come tomorrow ( here i want to inform the listner that i have told this to Sam)
Thanks in advance

If you want to express the idea in your parentheses, here are some alternatives,Originally Posted by smartraja
==> I've told Sam that Ron will come tomorrow. ( This sounds the best)
==> "Ron will come tomorrow," I said.
==> "Ron will come tomorrow," I said to Sam.
Your original sentence would make me think you are giving an opinion. And this is different from what you wanted to say.
==> I say that Ron will come tomorrow.
==> I think that Ron will come tomorrow.
I think someone will have something to add if this is incomplete. Just hold on to your posts. 8)
Not sure what you mean. I don't think there's a difference.Your original sentence would make me think you are giving an opinion. And this is different from what you wanted to say.
==> I say that Ron will come tomorrow.
==> I think that Ron will come tomorrow.
Say:
I said that Ron will come tomorrow (here I want to inform the listener that I have told Sam about this)

His original meaning was to say something to someone, not just an opinion.
It may be an opinion, or may not.
I said X
"X" I said
I think they've the same meaning most of the time.

Thanks for your reply.
My doubt is whether i'll be able to form a sentance like this
"I said to Sam that Ron will come tomorrow."
is it ok to have THAT with said ?
One more thing
When i have to use these sentences , i mean on which occasion it would be appropriate to use form 1 and form 2.
Form 1: "I told Sam that Ron will come tomorrow "
Form 2: "Ron will come tomorrow" , I said to Sam.
Thanks,
Smartraja.
Dear Francois,Your original sentence would make me think you are giving an opinion. And this is different from what you wanted to say.

Not sure what you mean. I don't think there's a difference.
Say:
I said that Ron will come tomorrow (here I want to inform the listener that I have told Sam about this)
If i write like
=> I said to Sam that "Ron will come tomorrow"
Is it an opinion.i dont think so, i have informed Sam about Ron's arrival tomorrow.
Pls correct me if i'm wrorng.
If i write like this :
=> "I say that Ron will come tomorrow. "
This is my opinion abt Ron's arrival . But if i use Said in place of Say... will it be a opinion or a Fact.
Thanks
Smartraja.

Both are correct, 'that' is optional.
For me, both can be used. When i have to use these sentences , i mean on which occasion it would be appropriate to use form 1 and form 2.
Form 1: "I told Sam that Ron will come tomorrow "
Form 2: "Ron will come tomorrow" , I said to Sam.
But if I write a novel, I prefer form 2 to make my articles more interesting.
Josh told me he loves me. This may be just a statement.
"I love you," Josh said to me. This one sounds more beautiful, doesn't it?
