Default draw vs paint

Hello, would anybody please tell me the difference of those two words?

I found an illustration of a man "painting" on a cambus. Below the illustration there was a sentence, which says "I like drawing pictures."

I had thought that we use "draw" when we use pens, pencils and so on, while we use "paint" when we use brushes or something like that.

I asked my colleague, who is from America. He told me that "draw" is more general than "paint" and that it is possible to use "draw" in the case above.

What do you think?

I'll appreciate your help.

Your distinction is generally sound. In this case, I thibnk that the inclusion of the word 'pictures' is behind the choice of verb; you could also say 'I like painting', but when we add 'pictures', drawing sounds better.
