Is it correct to use 'beyond textbooks'?

I would encourage my children to reading newspapers every day, which could lead them to learn extra knowledge beyond textbooks.

It is understandable, but it would be clearer to say "...acquire knowledge beyond what they will find in textbooks".

I would encourage my children to read newspapers every day, which could lead them to acquire the knowledge that they cannot learn from their textbooks.
