Is it ok to say " Today is My friend's memorial day"? I mean to say today is the day he died many years ago. Is there another expression?

Is there another expression? You can say, 'My friend died on this day (12 years ago)(in 1996).'

You can also say.."today is my friend's death anniversary."

I just don't think the word "anniversary" is used for deaths.

(commonly used in the US)
