Default is or was, I need your advice

Hillary Clinton (is/was) the former first lad of US.

I think that I should use "is" because it is a fact although former" denotes past. As I analyze it, using "was" would mean that she is again the first lady because it would mean that it is not true anymore. Please tell me if my idea is correct.
