Re: thief should one come out of one's house... The use of 'should' in this sentence is an example of the subjunctive form. It's used instead of the more common first conditional structure. It isn't often used in spoken English, but you sometimes find it in more literary forms of written English. Here are a couple more examples:
'If you should see a copy of this book in the shop, please buy it for me.'
'Please do not hesitate to ask for assistance from reception should you have any problems during your stay'
