I saw one sentence in Azar's black grammar book.
The children drew pictures of themselves in art class yesterday.
I think there should be an article, is he playing hide-and-seek?
The children drew pictures of themselves in an art class yesterday.

Blacknomi I think there should be no article. The sentence does not refer to a specific art class but to the curriculum in general.

Could it be optional?
The children drew pictures of themselves in art class yesterday.
==> They drew pictures in art class, not music class.
The children drew pictures of themselves in an art class yesterday.
==> It may be an art college. They drew pictures in an art class, not architecture class.

Twostep is right.
I love math class.
John and Mary had a fight yesterday in history class.
We think art class is fun.

In your examples, let me mark them
#1. I love math class.
#2. John and Mary had a fight yesterday in history class.
#3. We think art class is fun.
I think #1 and #3 are different from #2 because #2 takes a preposition while the others don't.
Can you think of an example that takes preposition+article+XXXclass?

Drawing pictures in an art class seems more natural to me than drawing pictures in a math class. OK
Drawing in art class seems more natural to me than drawing in math class. OK
However, Azar's example sounds more natural to me than your version with the article. It's the way I would say it.
