Default general public or public

I'd like to ask what phrase is more appropriate in the following sentence -- "the public" or "the general public".

The Company will further confirm the priority of Health Protection issues to interested persons and the general public.

"the public" might be people interested in this certain issue.

"the general public" would be anyone.
