The sentence:
History is a hill or high point of vantage, from which alone men see the town in which they live or the age in which they are living.
My book says the "or" above is used to indicate a synonymous expression. IMO, it is the most typical one used to indicate an alternative.
Which interpretation is correct? |

The book is correct -- "hill" and "high point of vantage" convey the same meaning here.

I don't think it is right either. I can see the link between the place and the time, but I think they are meant as alternatives here.  |
