I WANT TO KNOW HOW TO LIEARN ENGLISH

I have been learning English for 1 year in Canada. My western teacher told me that i have to forget my first language if i wanted learning good english. My asian teacher told me the opposite way to study english . i am quit confused that what i should do to study good English. Please give me an answer , i will be apprecite it.

It is interesting. Mother tongue helps second language acquistion, according to the site. Read on:

Your native tongue is part of you. Cherish and preserve it. To me English seems rather easy as it is well structured. Try to see the fun of learning it. That will make it easier for you, May I ask - what is your native language?

Aha, now I understand why good teachers here at times have to explain things to me over and over (as if I havn't noticed it myself). I am over 60, but never mind, I will keep learning no matter how old I am, right?
