What is the meaning of "take on" in the following context:
hi,
( Refering to a novel of Faulkner ) With its biblical and epic allusions, however, it also takes on the qualities of a mythological tale.
If it is possible, please, also give me, for a better understanding, a synonym.
Many thanks,
Madox
