'Believe' is a verb in its own right and tells someone about your strong opinion or conviction that something is right or wrong. Adding the preposition 'in' does not really change its meaning but is a more appropriate way of talking about a specific idea: 'Believe in ghosts/believe in love' compared to 'believe that ghosts exist/believe what someone tells you'.
