Could anyone teach me the meaning of "burny-eyed place" in the following sentence from a novel?



(A man named David helped a drawn girl up from the swimming pool, and laid her on the tile floor. She is not breathing anymore, though.)

"David laid the girl out on the tile. He'd gone to that burny-eyed place he went in a crisis, his movements pricise and spare. He said, "Start CPR. I'm calling 911" "

The author is an American, Joshilyn Jackson, and the book is not published yet. (I'm reading a sample version.)
From the context of this scene, David doesn't seem angry or nearly to cry.
Before David pulls up the drawn girl from the pool, his wife tries to do that but fails.

Chebu, I can't honestly say that I have an answer for this. If not angry or upset what else (emotion) would cause your eyes to burn? Hope you get an answer.
