the meaning of "staff(s)"

Could you please tell me the meaning of "staff(s)"?

I used the word to express "employee(s)", but a native speaker said to me, "native speakers never use the word as a meaning of "employee(s). It's a Japanized English."

I'm a little confused because my dictionary, Longman, has a meaning as "employee(s)" and the example sentence.
(e.g.)
The entire staff has done an outstanding job this year.

It is used to refer to the employees of a company, not to a single employee:

The staff of the company were all supportive of the new management - All the members of staff/employees.
