ABC Award judge John Brown president of the Agriculture Research Confederationsaid, "XYZ is a tremendous example of leading edge bio-research.
A spin-off from the United University bio-research depailment, XYZ was set up twoyears ago by three scientists. Their aim is to find commercial applications for bio-researchdiscoveries.

Re: spin-off
In this context, it means that the three scientists decided to work on a new project. With the knowledge base they already had they were able to create a new divergent focus. If it helps, imagine a child's spinning-top spinning round, then add a few drops of water and watch them spin off.
