Default What does it mean?

Hello everyone,

What is the meaning of "see you later alligator"
Is it only goodbye?
Is it funny?
Is there any hidden meaning for such expression?

It's part of the endearing phrase: 'see you later alligator'...to which the response would be: 'in a while crocodile'; to my knowledge a harmless goodbye slogan.
