Default Can anyone help me to clarify this sentence?

Can anyone help me to understand this sentence better? (The sentence is the one been high-lined.)

"The left brain weaves its story in order to convince itself and you that it is in full control....What is so adaptive about having what amounts to a spin doctor in the left brain? The interpreter is really trying to keep our personal story together. To do that, we have to learn to lie to ourselves."

There are the words that I am not sure I understand correctly.

1. adaptive
Does it mean "suitable for" or "can be used" or "applicable" here?

2. amounts
Does it mean "importance" here?

3. spin
Does it mean "out of control" here? (jokingly)

Assuming these are what they mean here. Does this sentence mean:

What is the application of what has happened in left brain, which is so important to an out of control doctor ?

Thank you so very much!

Love,

Sarah

Adaptive- flexible, able to change and adapt
Amounts to- equals (or nearly equals)
Spin doctor- someone who twists the facts to present the view they want- politicians are often advised by spin doctors on how to put a positive view things that have gone wrong

The left side of the brain changes the way we see events that have happened, twisting the facts so that we are better able to live with them
