Default 7,876,760 population

FAREAST EVERYDAY ENGLISH CHINESE DICTIONARY has in it such a sentence:
New York City contains 7,876,760 population.

I've never seen this use of 'population' in any other dictionary. Does the sentence sound fine?

Could I ask native English teachers to answer this question? Thank you very much.

Default Re: 7,876,760 population

"A population of nearly 8 million" would be better; your version (which I may have met) sounds like a mangled version of that. Also, people tend to use big words when they're trying to impress - as the speaker obviously is with such a ridiculously precise figure.
