The Minister will soon be in the proverbial eye of a typhoon.
At stake is an issue which is so huge that it affects every member of our society.
While the GST attempt ended in failure, it is too early to say how forthcoming lawmakers and the public will be to the medical reforms this time around.

Could you explain the following expressions underlined?
The Minister will soon be in the proverbial eye of a typhoon. "at/in the eye of the storm" = in the absolute centre of something. Without context, it is difficult to say if the author also meant that there was big trouble.

"Typhoon" is used instead of "Storm", but essentially there is no difference in meaning.

At stake is an issue which is so huge that it affects every member of our society. If you bet on something, you put down a stake. You may lose the stake if things go against you.


While the GST attempt ended in failure, it is too early to say how forthcoming lawmakers and the public will be to the medical reforms this time around. Here "forthcoming" means "receptive/willing to act". Not in my view a good word in the context.
