Is it correct to repeat "of" at every object in a list, or is it enough to write it only the first time?

this is the complete sentence:
...or other operations in the chest requiring opening of the sternum or the chest cavity.

It sounds terrible to me!

I don't understand your query I'm afraid. I see no repetition of the word 'of' in the sentence you give.

However, it isn't necessary to repeat 'of' before every noun.

Example;

The cake was made of flour, eggs, sugar, dried fruit and brandy.

In this example, I would use a second "of". But it is not absolutely necessary.
