The correct answer is "administration". However, I can't see clearly why "running" is incorrect, as it means "the act of administering something, as in "He was responsible for the running of two companies"". Thank you

Yes but in the question it would mean literally running.

If you use this word, you must make it clear that you mean its non-literal use. This is done by adding "of the company"

The job includes the day-to-day running of the company.
