brick by brick
Please help me understand the following in bold.
1. We found ourselves operating within an organizational structure that had become too complex to meet the needs of today's and tomorrow's business. We had arrived where we were thoughtfully, but sort of brick by brick. Our regional operations were strong, carrying profit-and-loss responsibility. We had overlaid this network with global category teams that were responsible for product design, marketing strategy, and manufacturing sourcing. Corporate staff drove improvement across all of our businesses in areas such as manufacturing reliability.
Thank you.

We had arrived where we were thoughtfully, but sort of brick by brick. We arrived [at this state of complexity] through thinking about what we were doing, but item by item rather than as a whole interlocking system.
We had overlaid this network with global category teams Over the network of regional operations we instituted a series of teams...
manufacturing sourcing manufacturers who can supply us with required goods.
manufacturing reliability ensuring that the manufacturers supplied on a regular basis, to a required standard, and at a reasonable cost.
