Are the following ok??
1. The Principle diverted our tuition to his personal use - a family pilgramage to Mecca.
2. Owing to the commander's diversion strategy, we averted a total defeat.
3. Beginning in September, the University will revert to the semester academic system.
Should University and Principle be capitalized?
Thanks a million.

[quote="bmo"]Are the following ok??
a) A principal is your "pal" (i.e., friend). Note the spelling. :wink:1. The Principle diverted our tuition to his personal use - a family pilgramage to Mecca.
b) diverted sounds odd to me in that context
c) The symbol " - " should be two, like this " -- "
d) I don't get the connection: --a family....
e) pilgrims go on pilgrimages. Note the spelling
a) What about, just diversion? Strategy is implied.2. Owing to the commander's diversion strategy, we averted a total defeat.
b) I'd change averted to escaped. But that's just me. :)
What about, just the semester system? Academic is implied by the word "University".3. Beginning in September, the University will revert to the semester academic system.
If it refers to a specific person's title or name, it should be capitalized. That is, if you know who/what you are talking about, then capitalize the word:Should University and Principle be capitalized?
The Principal (Specific person at our school)
The University (Specific place)
The principal in a school should... (I don't know the person's name)
The university down the road... (I don't know the university's name)
Thanks Cas, Ok now?
1. The Principal diverted our tuition into his personal accounts. He was caught when he tried to use the money to finance his family pilgrimage to Mecca.
2. Owing to the commander's diversion, we averted a total defeat.
3. Beginning in September, the University will revert to the semester system.
Thanks.

I think I see it now. Divert the scholarship fund would have been better. It is not the word, divert, that makes it look funny, it is tuition.
Prevent a total defeat would be better.
Thanks.
