I had asked a question about a comma being place after “Today” and the teacher stated it is fine with or without the comma. Why is that?



I have a demonstration speech to present for my speech class tomorrow. I wanted to know if a comma goes after today. For example:

Today, I will explain how to write a check.



It is fine with or without the comma.

The presence of the comma will aid your presentation. It will tell you where to place emphasis. Today, (pause), I will explain how to.......

A comma is a pause.
Say the sentences with and then without the pause.
It is just a way to emphasis the word, "today."
