hint means, a slight or indirect indication or suggestion.

The meaning of I got the hint can be positive or negative. It depends on the context. :wink:

Example
Pat: I've been leaving phone messages on your machine all week. Why haven't you returned my messages? Why haven't you called me back?
Max: Can't you take a hint?!
Pat: What do you mean?
Max: I didn't call you back because I don't want to talk to you. I am ignoring you.
Pat: I got the hint now.
