Chicago thing?
Hello,
I'm listening an interview of Michael Man, and have three questions
from it.
He's talking about what was like in Chicago around late 50's to early 60's.
And suddenly mention;
"The cigar store had a card room in the back.
There's names in the newspapers.
It's very much of a Chicago thing...
in the sense that The Front Page came out of Chicago...
came out of that sensibility"
Question 1
Is he saying "_The_ cigar store" because it's famous?
I searched through the internet, and found "Knoch Cigar Store" and
"Cigar Store Indians". (I wonder if they are the same place)
Does he mean "The famous cigar store had a gambling room for bad guys
in the back?
Question 2
Does "There's names in the newspapers" mean the names who were doing
gamle at the card room?
Question 3
Does "It's very much of a Chicago thing...
in the sense that The Front Page came out of Chicago...
came out of that sensibility" mean most of incidents in newspapers were
happened in Chicago, and also the news at the front page was about
Chicago?? I particularly don't understand "come out of that sensibility"
part.
I'm sorry I've asked a lot.
Thank you,
Tara

Re: Chicago thing?
"The cigar store had a card room in the back" probably refers to a cigar store that had previously been mentioned. Other things about the cigar store had probably already been discussed. I have been given no reason to believe it was a famous cigar store.
I think The Front Page was a movie. Perhaps it was based on events that happened in Chicago.

Re: Chicago thing?
Yes, the Front Page is a movie. It is a comedy about the antics in a newsroom. The characters are all cigar smoking, drinking reporters trying to get the latest story.
I think these sentences help set the "mood" of the times. It was a time when men could find card games going on in the back of a cigar store and the newspaper stories were about local people, so you could find familiar names in the paper.

Re: Chicago thing?
Hello RonBee,
Thank you so much for your kind remark.
I see I might have missed the part where he talks about the cigar store
previously.
>I think The Front Page was a movie. Perhaps it was based on events that happened in Chicago.
Yes! I was able to find an overview about the movie. Thanks a lot!

Hello susiedqq,
According to your comment, "The Front Page" sounds very
interesting movie. I think I should watch it sometime soon.
I was so confused and had no idea what he's saying, so I really
appreciated your detailed explanation. Thank you very much!
