Safety vs. Security?

Hi,

What is the difference between safety and security?

What does it mean to be safe and how is it different from being secure?

And in computer's world. When is your computer safe? and when is it secured? Because I see forums for "Safety and Security" of computers, so the two must be different?

But one should be aware that commercial sites often, for marketing reasons, make distinctions that aren't as hard and fast as the marketeers would like.

This distinction (safe - unlikely to cause physical harm; secure - invulnerable to external attack) is persuasive but imperfect. When a business selling anti-virus software says 'Is your computer safe?' it doesn't mean 'Is your computer likely to burst into flames?'; but when a business selling smoke alarms says 'Is your computer safe?' it may well mean just that.
