Default be in your way, every step of the way

Dear teacher,
"...
If I should stay,
I would only be in your way,
So I'll go, but I know
I will think of you every step of the way. ..."

The above words are digested from the song named I will always love you. But could you please tell me the meaning of "I would only be in your way",and "every step of the way."?

Thank you very much.
