Default Parents' discipline?

If you are a kid, you have your parents control you, telling you what to do and what not to do, preventing you from doing something that they deem unfit. What would you call what your parents are doing? Parents' discipline? I am looking for some words to fill in the following blank.

Because of ____________, he has grown up to be a well-civilized man.

Thanks. :)
