Default Questions on English

Which words do "pros and cons" come from? Surely they are abreviation of words? Also what does oranges and apples mean?
Thank you in advance

From the Latin "pro et contra"; "for and against."
"Pro" is not abbreviated, but "con" is an English abbreviation for the Latin "contra."

pro=singular, pros=plural
con=singular, cons=plural
